│ WHAT IS A "ZIP" FILE? │
│ │
│ ZIP is a method of file compression developed by Phil Katz and │
│ his company known as PKWARE. Thus the program name PKZIP. Most │
│ of the programs on BIZynet BBS are "zipped". This saves a lot of │
│ disk space and saves you time in downloading them. Often the │
│ programs are reduced in size by as much as 75%. Most MS-DOS │
│ programs consist of many files, each of which is necessary for │
│ the program to work. It would be inconvenient to have to download │
│ each file separately, so the program is "zipped" into one file │
│ that is smaller than the original program. After you receive the │
│ file, you "PKUNZIP" it back to it's original size ready to run. │
│ │
│ In order to use program files that have been "zipped", you'll need │
│ a copy of PKZIP. The latest version can be found in the Utilities │
│ section of BIZynet's library. The file, PKZ110.EXE, is "self │
│ extracting", meaning that it will "unzip" itself automatically │
│ when you run it. From there, you can read the documents and do │
│ some experimenting. It's actually quite easy to learn & master. │
